Do you have a career plan?
There is a wise saying that “If you don’t make a plan – someone else will make one for you…..and guess what they have planned for you – NOT MUCH” This is especially relevant when talking about your career.
If you have known where you wanted to go since day one then fantastic but chances are you have been unsure, altered, tweaked and while you know what the ultimate goal is you are still trying to figure out how to get there.
If you’ve worked hard, done all the right things and your appraisals have been off the chart –
you have followed your company’s ‘plan’ to the letter – but what about you? What do you want?
To make a significant move forward, you’ll need to go beyond being great at your current job — Let’s see if I can help.
Don’t be resistant to changing the plan (slightly)
You may have a very specific idea of where you want to be and what you think you need to do to get there…If so, amazing news – but be wary. Your Boss may have other thoughts. Climbing that ladder is just like a game of snakes and ladders. You could be going up one minute but one wrong step and you could be snaking back down to the beginning. – Plan your steps carefully. Know if your boss has your back and you are both on the same page.
Know your boss
As I said above – plan carefully. You need to know your boss and know what their ultimate goal is.
If it is to progress by standing on you then you may need to let them progress first before you can step up and hope they will then pull you up with them – not ideal and honestly – not a great boss. Alternatively, you could look at leaving that boss to pursue a new company…..and on the rare but beautiful occasion you have an amazing boss. Well then savour it – you are about to start going places.
Set your goals
Find a great boss, set career goals and be open to changing the plan if need be. These three things set you up to greatness.
