Even so, just 14% said they were confident about their organization\u2019s ability to drive innovation effectively.<\/p>\n<p>We expect this gap exists because too many companies invest in structures, programs, and efforts to fuel innovative thinking without also investing in innovation leadership.<\/p>\n<p>We suggest focusing on the leadership capabilities that drive innovation.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Drive Innovation<\/h2>\n<h3>3 Key Practices<\/h3>\n<p>We advocate for 3 practices that leaders can use to drive innovation forward in their organizations. Here\u2019s how to drive innovation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Define<\/strong> a key innovation challenge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understand<\/strong> how the work of innovation varies by leader level.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop<\/strong> what\u2019s needed for innovative thinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/3-leadership-practices-that-drive-innovation-in-your-organization-center-for-creative-leadership.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/3-leadership-practices-that-drive-innovation-in-your-organization-center-for-creative-leadership.png\" alt=\"Infographic: 3 Leadership Practices That Will Help Drive Innovation in Your Organization\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>1. Define a key innovation challenge.<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s typically hard to justify innovation efforts when there isn\u2019t a discernible purpose. Innovation works best when it addresses a challenge \u2014 whether it\u2019s pain, lack of progress, or complexities recognized within the organization.<\/p>\n<p>We work with leaders on specific innovation leadership challenges through coaching and programs. It helps to link the workplace reality with the processes and leadership development that are required to drive a needed innovation.<\/p>\n<p>To boost innovation broadly \u2014 or develop individuals in key roles \u2014 go beyond providing workshops or tools. Leaders need practice and application. Ask them to identify and work on a key innovation challenge, an issue, or need that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is important to you, your team, or the organization \u2014 and over which you have some ownership or influence.<\/li>\n<li>Involves others who also have a significant investment in the outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Has persisted over a period of time and requires some creativity and imagination to resolve.<\/li>\n<li>May require changes in assumptions, behaviors, or standard operating procedure for those involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How might I get multiple stakeholders (internal and external) to share resources and partner better?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In what ways might we improve the profitability of this product line\/service?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How can we improve our ability to rival new competitors in a specific channel?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What might be all the ways to break into a given market?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2. Understand the work of innovation by leader level.<\/h4>\n<p>The work of innovation varies by level. Help your leaders focus on how <em>they<\/em> can drive innovation, given their role in the organization, and target training and development given this reality. Learn more about <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/role-innovation-depends\/\">how your role in innovation depends on where you sit<\/a> in the organization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Individual leaders<\/em><\/strong> are responsible for ideation and creation. Their innovation work involves seeking and generating novel solutions and approaches, participating on innovation teams, and pushing across boundaries.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Team leaders<\/em><\/strong> may be managers, line supervisors, or project leaders who are accountable for team performance and managing resources. Their innovation work includes leading group innovation processes and obtaining resources from outside their units.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Leaders of managers<\/em><\/strong> support innovation teams by serving as connectors and champions. Their role includes supporting and protecting the innovation team from organizational systems, building a case for grassroots innovations, and facilitating cooperation between groups working on similar opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Leaders of functions<\/em><\/strong> help develop the innovation strategy and manage the pipeline of new products, processes, and services. They need to bridge silos and initiate changes to accommodate promising innovations.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Senior leadership<\/em><\/strong> sets innovation strategy for the organization. These executives shape the culture so that \u201cnew, different, and disruptive\u201d ideas are supported throughout the organization. An effective toolset can be a critical part of driving innovation in an organization \u2014 and there are countless resources out there. Prototyping, brainstorming, mind-mapping, and excursions are just a few.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skillsets:<\/strong> Innovation leadership also requires facility, practice, and mastery of processes \u2014 a framework that allows innovation leaders to use their toolset, knowledge, and abilities to accomplish their goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mindsets:<\/strong> A leader\u2019s mindset is the attitudes and resulting behaviors that allow the tools and skills to be effective.
