So, to succeed in your new role, <strong>shift the way you think and act<\/strong> in these 6 key areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Mindset:<\/strong> You\u2019re leading others now, not just yourself, so gather resources on how to do this effectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationships:<\/strong> You\u2019ll want to shift from the role of \u201cfriend\u201d to the role of \u201cboss\u201d when at work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attitude:<\/strong> You\u2019ll need to delegate the work and not try to do it all anymore.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perspective:<\/strong> You\u2019ll want to be sure you\u2019re seeing the bigger picture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus:<\/strong> You&#8217;ll want to focus on what\u2019s right, not what\u2019s easy or self-serving.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skillset:<\/strong> You\u2019ll want to develop new skills to manage your team effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/6-shifts-to-attain-for-how-to-be-an-effective-boss-center-for-creative-leadership.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"dropShadow\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/6-shifts-to-attain-for-how-to-be-an-effective-boss-center-for-creative-leadership.png\" alt=\"Infographic: 6 Shifts New Leaders Must Make to Be an Effective Boss\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>1. Shift your mindset.<\/h4>\n<p>Now is the time to become a more versatile leader. As a manager of others, you need to learn new ways of achieving results, because success isn\u2019t about your individual contribution anymore. It\u2019s about getting the best out of each direct report to meet the group\u2019s goals. In this new role, versatility may be your best asset.<\/p>\n<p>Being a versatile leader means that you can choose a range of responses to achieve results. Versatility requires you to open your eyes to your own preferences and behaviors, read others accurately, and learn a variety of tactics to deal with <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/first-time-managers-must-conquer-these-challenges\/\">the most common challenges new managers face<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Take stock of your own strengths, weaknesses, and patterns \u2014 after all, who you are drives how you lead. Even though the emphasis is no longer on your individual performance, you need to understand your natural preferences and tendencies. The most effective way to lead others may not always be your default approach.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you might be a person who thrives on the pressure of a tight deadline and, as an individual contributor, earned a reputation as someone who could roll up their sleeves and get the job done well, even at the last minute. But now, as a manager of others, using these same practices and preferences could lead to poor planning, micromanaging, or inadequate use of resources. If you assume everyone operates the same way you did as an individual contributor, you won\u2019t see or leverage the array of talent on your team.<\/p>\n<p>To be successful, you\u2019ll want to have an open approach to learning new things. Our research has found that the most successful new leaders have a motivation to learn that comes from a belief that learning is fun, exciting, and engaging, and that far outweighs a motivation of rewards, recognition, and impressing others.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Shift your relationships.<\/h4>\n<p>Your former peers (some may even be your close friends) now directly report to you. Plus, you\u2019re not just a team member. You now lead the team and should motivate others.<\/p>\n<p>This shift from the role of \u201cpeer\u201d to boss can be tricky. Former coworkers who were colleagues and friends will view you somewhat differently once you\u2019re in a leadership position. We recommend you work with the system by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Gathering information<\/em><\/strong> about the thoughts, behaviors, and needs of coworkers and stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Observing what is appropriate behavior<\/em><\/strong> for each situation and acting on it.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Connecting genuinely with a diverse group of people<\/em><\/strong> to gain new information and build support for your team\u2019s \u2014 and stakeholders\u2019 \u2014 goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>5. Shift your focus.<\/h4>\n<p>With leadership comes responsibility \u2014 to act always based on what\u2019s right, rather than what\u2019s easy or self-serving. Both new and experienced leaders must understand that actions and decisions can have far-reaching consequences. So flip your focus and realize <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/the-irony-of-integrity-a-study-of-the-character-strengths-of-leaders\/\">the importance of integrity and character<\/a>, and doing the \u201cright\u201d thing in everything you do \u2014 even when you think no one is watching.<\/p>\n<p>Consider how your words and actions could affect your team, the organization, and everyone involved.\u00a0Developing integrity takes time and practice. We recommend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Consider carefully:<\/em><\/strong> When making important decisions, ask, <em>\u201cWhat would Mom (or other important figures in your life) think about this?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Be honest<\/em><\/strong> about what you can and can\u2019t do \u2014 and when you can deliver.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Don\u2019t let anything cloud your judgment:<\/em><\/strong> Not a relationship, time pressure, or monetary rewards. Take yourself out of the equation to fully understand the consequences of any decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you focus on integrity and build trusting relationships with your team, you\u2019ll become a leader that everyone trusts and respects.<\/p>\n<h4>6. Shift your skillset.<\/h4>\n<p>Many new leaders struggle because they rely too much on technical skills that aren&#8217;t as necessary in the role of boss. So shift your skill set and work on enhancing key skills for leading others.
