3 Ways To Get Unstuck In Your Career > Advance Your Career With Nikki Thomas

One of the biggest issues I find with my clients when embarking on their career journey is the feeling of being ‘stuck’.

It seems that now with so many choices available we feel under pressure to make the most of every single day.

How many times are we told to live for the moment, to make the most of our lives?

We seem to be forever suffering with FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or that our lives are going to waste if we don’t make the most of every single second. The issue with this however is that we are all on a one way ticket to burn out.

The added pressure also leaves us with the feeling of being stuck in a rut and with that we can go around in circles questioning what we really want and asking how we keep everyone happy as well as ourselves.

So here are 3 ways to get yourself unstuck and ready to think seriously about what you want from your career:

1. Build yourself back up – start thinking positively.

Do you ever hear yourself saying any of these negative phrases?

  • I’ll never be good enough
  • I don’t have what it takes

If you frequently put yourself down with statements like the above, you hold yourself back from seeing what you could be capable of achieving. That could be a promotion, a career change or even stepping up to manage a new project. The next time these thoughts come up, challenge them with statements such as ‘What if I am good enough?’, ‘What if things did work for me?’ Challenging statements helps you to step outside of your current beliefs instead of accepting them as a part of your reality.

2. Accept that everyone will fail sometimes and embrace it.

Are you so scared of failing that you don’t allow yourself to get started? Some of the most successful people in the world have failed before they were a success. Change your perspective by viewing failure as an opportunity for you to learn and move one step closer to what you want to achieve. If you didn’t get that job you applied for then ask for feedback and find out why. Then act on it. Maybe you need more experience in a certain area. This will help you to feel more comfortable with taking small steps towards what you want rather than being paralysed by fear.

3. Stop waiting for ‘someday’ to arrive

How many times have you told yourself any of the following?

  • When I earn more I’ll be able to…
  • I need to research a bit more before I…
  • I need to practice a few more times before I can…

Sometimes we can hold ourselves back from doing what we want because we’re waiting for a perfect time to arrive before we do it. This can be a trap that holds us back from taking action and keeps us stuck procrastinating. The next time you find yourself saying ‘someday’ change that statement to a date that you plan to take action!
Your career journey will only move forward if you let it. No one can do it for you and a lot of the time you are the only one holding yourself back.
